About the course
Overview
Introduction to Mental Health in the Workplace
Research shows that work is the leading cause of stress, often affecting people's ability to perform at their best. Despite this, many mental health conditions remain hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination. A culture of silence around mental health can be damaging and costly for employers. The HSE’s ‘First Aid Needs Assessment’ guidance now includes mental health as an important consideration in the workplace. This qualification equips learners with the knowledge to recognise a variety of mental health conditions, start supportive conversations, and understand when and how to signpost individuals to professional help. It also teaches how to recognise and manage stress effectively. While learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions (this must be done by healthcare professionals) they will gain the confidence to spot warning signs, offer reassurance, and guide someone towards appropriate support. This regulated qualification is recognised across the UK and supports a proactive approach to mental health in the workplace. Do you have a group needing this training? We can deliver the session on-site or via our virtual classroom for groups of 6 or more. Get in touch for more details!
Understanding Mental Health in the Workplace
Poor mental health affects a significant portion of the working population and continues to be a growing concern in modern workplaces. Long-term stress, unmanaged mental health issues, and the pressures of everyday life can all contribute to reduced wellbeing and productivity. Often, individuals choose to suffer in silence, held back by stigma, fear of judgement, or not knowing where to turn for help. This silence can lead to increased absenteeism, presenteeism, and lower staff morale. Recognising this, the HSE’s 'First Aid Needs Assessment' now encourages employers to consider mental health alongside physical first aid provisions. This 6-hour qualification gives learners practical knowledge and confidence to identify signs of poor mental health, initiate supportive conversations, and guide individuals towards appropriate support. It also covers stress management techniques and explores the effects of substance misuse on mental wellbeing. Learners will be introduced to a structured First Aid Action Plan for Mental Health, enabling them to take informed and supportive steps when needed. Additionally, they’ll explore ways to help foster a positive mental health culture within the workplace. While this course does not train individuals to diagnose or treat mental health conditions, responsibilities reserved for healthcare professionals, it does empower learners to spot potential concerns, provide reassurance, and know how and where to access further help. Supervising Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace
Mental health plays a crucial role in overall wellbeing and performance, yet it often goes unspoken in the workplace. With increasing awareness around mental health challenges, employers are being encouraged to take a more active role in supporting their teams. The HSE’s 'First Aid Needs Assessment' now highlights the importance of addressing mental health alongside physical health in every workplace. This qualification is designed to give learners the confidence and understanding to identify early signs of mental ill-health, including the impact of stress and substance misuse. They will explore how professional support services such as counselling, therapy, or medical care can help individuals manage their mental health and recovery. Participants will be introduced to a mental health first aid action plan, gaining the tools to respond effectively in a supportive and non-judgemental way. They’ll also look at how to help build a healthier, more open culture around mental health in the workplace. While learners will not be expected to diagnose or provide treatment (this remains the role of healthcare professionals) they will be equipped to recognise when someone may be struggling, offer appropriate reassurance, and direct them towards suitable help and resources. This course encourages proactive, compassionate responses and helps create workplaces where mental health is taken seriously. Do you have a group needing this training? The course also covers how to recognise and manage stress, and introduces the First Aid Action Plan for Mental Health enabling learners to understand and apply it effectively.
